With a field of 43 swimmers the Fieldstone Invitational 4.5 mile open water swim started almost on time under cloudy skies and wind. It was the worst weather we had to swim in sense the start of the event 3 years ago, but the field of swimmers overcame the wind and light rain to blow out the old records that were set at the lake swim.

Swimmers from the Dynamo Masters of Atlanta sent in the biggest contingent of swimmers, followed by the North Ga Rapids swim team. Both of these clubs took home awards and got their names in the record books.

Scott Fredrick from Alpharetta Ga led the field of swimmers across the lake and had an overall winning time of 1:26 :29. Twelve year old Allison Maxwell was the overall winner for the ladies with a winning time of 1:36:02.

The race across the lake was made safe thanks to the help of the Clay County Rescue Squad by having 7 water vehicles on the lake to watch over the swimmers.

We at the Great Smoky Mountains Triathlon Club want to thank the Fieldstone Resort for sponsoring this event and donating the supplies and boats that were used to produce the race.

My thanks to all the swim clubs that were here to compete from as far away as Jacksonville NC, Birmingham Al, La Grange GA, & Knoxville Tn. We are looking forward to next years race when the club wants to put on 2 open water swim. The second swim will be called the Chatuge Double Cross. The best of the best swimmers will not only do one crossing of the lake, but 2 crossings. They will swim from the Fieldstone resort to the Chatuge Dam and back again, a total of 9 miles. I'll let you know the dates for that swim sometime early in 2001.

Keep an eye on the web site for more updates on this race and other races we're doing here in the beautiful N Ga and Western NC Mountains.
